Description

This measuring cell serves to determine the dropping and softening points of fats and pasty products.
The dropping point is defined as the temperature at which the first drop of a melted sample of substance under investigation flows through the 2.8 mm opening of a standard dropping point sample cup on slow heating.
Dropping point measurement are possible only with smaples which have a low enough viscosity at elevated temperatures to flow through the 2.8 mm diameter opening: fats, paraffins, waxes, lubricating greases and also noncrystalline substances such as low moleclar weight natural resins.
The softening point is defined as the temperature at which the sample softens on slow heating in a standard softening point cup and flows 20 mm out of the 6.3 mm sample cup opening.
The softening point is suited for substances that soften on heating but dont forma melt of low viscosity such as tar, pitch, Bitumen, asphalt, hot melt.
