The sterile airflow in the cabinet keeps the material free from contamination and pollution (product protection); the downflow also provides reasonable protection against cross-contamination during the experiment. Due to the intake of air from the laboratory room, a protective air curtain is created at the front of the cabinet (personal protection). Because the air expelled at the top of the cabinet first passes through a HEPA filter, the air within the laboratory/outdoor environment is also free from contamination.
